Rarely has an issue met with as much enthusiasm as the 1,500 to 2,000 euros that Mayor Franz Ostermeier recently wanted to give away.

Mittelstetten / Baindlkirch - His proposal was not only approved by the local council, some speakers even wanted to set the amount significantly higher.

The willingness to donate was not directed to a distressed association, but to a group of volunteers in the neighboring district of Aichach-Friedberg.

Because the "first responders" from Baindlkirch are already there when the emergency doctor is still on the way. Almost 70 of the more than 300 missions to date in 2021 took them to Mittelstetten.

These first aiders are always informed by the rescue control centers when they can be the first at an accident site or with a seriously ill person with their likely travel time. They provide first aid, can ventilate and resuscitate, give preliminary diagnoses to the approaching Sanka or doctor, or simply calm down and encourage others. Some of them have trained as emergency paramedics, others are car mechanics or heating engineers who have been trained in up to 100 hours of advanced training. And because around half of the 13-strong troop is in Baindlkirch during the day, a standby service can be organized. Usually there are three of them in the car, but at least one first aider can always be on the way.

Immediate measures are required for around every tenth mission, and resuscitation was successful twice in 2021, says first-aider chief Franz Guha (23), who is also the fire brigade commander in Baindlkirch. Everyday life is more likely to be symptoms of sudden illness than accidents: an inflamed appendix or colic. But it is not uncommon for it to be less dramatic: some patients are more likely to have disorders than serious complaints.

The First Responder was created in 1993 as one of the first in Bavaria. The main drivers were a Baindlkirchner who worked for the professional fire brigade in Munich, as well as a general practitioner with an emergency doctor qualification. All but two of the volunteers are with the local fire brigade, which supports the offer through their friends' association. In their home district, the first aiders are usually only deployed in their municipality of Ried, to which Baindlkirch belongs: the ambulance stationed in Mering is faster almost everywhere else. In return, they cover part of the Dachau region and practically the entire north-west of Fürstenfeldbruck: in addition to Mittelstetten, also Althegnenberg and Oberschweinbach.

The municipality of Ried pays the tank filling and repair costs for the car, everything else has to be financed by the first responders themselves - through waste paper collections and donations received from companies or former patients. Not even used bandages will be reimbursed. In a social network they have now asked for donations for the new vehicle that is due and must be purchased at the end of next year.

The community of Mittelstetten wants to give a grant.

Mayor Ostermeier ran open doors in the municipal council with his proposal to transfer the money for the unusual Christmas dinner to Baindlkirch.

Michael Robeller (CSU) spoke of "the best rescue around".

"These are the people who save lives," said Erwin Lauchner (BU).

The exact amount of the grant, possibly even a permanent grant, should be discussed again.

Grant for a new ambulance

Althegnenberg also helps the first responders from Baindlkirch with the acquisition of a new vehicle.

Mayor Rainer Spicker discovered the appeal for donations and brought the issue to the local council.

The committee voted unanimously to support the first responders with 3000 euros, a maximum of ten percent of the acquisition costs.

Over 40 of the more than 300 missions carried out last year led helpers to Althegnenberg,

Since 1995 the local helpers (HvO) have also been on duty in the community.

On-call manager Michaela Selzer had reported at the meeting that a deficit of 600 euros would have to be shouldered in 2021 due to reduced income.

The local council decided to step in and pledged its support for 2022 should there be a deficit again.

"We are all very happy that we have this supply in the western district," said Spicker when asked by the daily newspaper.

In addition to the HvO and the first responders, there is also the ambulance station located in Mammendorf, which also acts as first aiders.

Spicker: “The three complement each other very well, and we want to treat all three equally when it comes to grants.
