This is the first time that the NATO-Russia council has met for two years and for this anniversary, the Russian side has put on the table an exorbitant demand: the official renunciation of any new enlargement to the east.
"It is time for the Alliance to return to the borders of 1997"
, when NATO had not yet integrated the countries freed from the communist yoke, affirms the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Ryabkov. Vladimir Poutine had recognized it a few years ago in a press conference with the former secretary general of the Alliance Anders Fogh Rasmussen:
"My dream is that there is no more NATO"
, he had said in substance. Since then, animosity and resentment towards the Organization has grown even further.
"NATO has become a pure political project whose goal is to seize territories left orphaned by the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union"
, denounces Sergey Lavrov, the head of Russian diplomacy.
