Lessons in Bavaria's schools started again yesterday - with bad news for many students: At the urging of the Ministry of Culture, the schools have to cancel all excursions, ski camps and trips to Berlin planned for the Easter holidays.

Munich

- Manfred Jahreis takes a deep breath.

Hardly has the school start after the winter holidays - under double test requirement - than the head of the secondary school Gauting (Starnberg district) has to bring his students bad news again: Schools should cancel the class trips.

It is an instruction from the Ministry of Culture: "Due to the spread of the Omikron variant, we have asked the schools to cancel all planned multi-day class trips until the Easter holidays," confirms a spokesman for our newspaper.

Only one-day trips to a museum, for example, are allowed.

In the event that the corona wave continues to swell, “no compensation for any cancellation costs that may arise” can be provided, emphasizes the ministry.

Bavaria's schools are starting again - despite the Omikron variant and high numbers of infections

The disappointment is huge. "That is the worst for our students: The ski camp was moved to March and the study trips to Berlin and Hamburg from October to the time after Easter," says Jahreis. "It's sad, because joint ventures keep the school family together - and in the end they are the most formative memories."

This is how Claudia Reiserer, headmistress of the Miesbach grammar school, sees it.

A ski camp was not even planned here.

“The eighth graders' Latin trip to Regensburg in March has also been canceled.” The same applies to the orientation days for the tenth graders in Benediktbeuern, which would have already taken place in November.

"We are glad that the organizer canceled it himself: Nobody sleeps with a mask - I personally had great understanding for the concerns of the parents." Day to join us in class. ”It is a plan B. But one that can hardly replace the community experience for the students.

Ministry of Culture: Schools should cancel class trips until Easter

Many other schools have responded to the appeal by the Ministry of Culture: The Viscardi-Gymnasium in Fürstenfeldbruck has canceled all planned ski courses for the seventh grade - for the second time after they were also canceled last year due to the pandemic. And the Max-Born-Gymnasium Germering yesterday canceled all three ski camps, the Berlin trip of the Q11 and all trips as part of the student exchange.

However, the number of infections shows that the headmaster's decisions are right.

Because right at the start of school yesterday, the first cases of infection occurred: "There were a few positive results," says Reiserer.

Her colleague Jahreis reports on one case - as well as six students who have already reported sick in advance because of an infection.

At the Erding Middle School, twelve students are on sick leave due to Corona.

"In addition, there were two positive results in the self-tests on site," says school director Stephan Treffler.

"I think that some quick tests actually worked on the weekend - so it was good that we told everyone in advance not to take the first test after the holidays in the classroom if possible."
