Some residents of the Bronx residential building where a fire killed 17 people on Sunday may return to top-floor apartments, New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) told CNN on Tuesday.

"Some residents are now able to relocate apartments on the upper floors," said spokeswoman Ines Bebea.

"The process is ongoing and evolving."

The agency was unable to provide a timeline for when or how many people will re-enter the building, as the building management is notifying residents individually and is "not rushing people back to their apartments," Bebea said. .

Records from the New York City Department of Construction show the building is listed with a partial eviction order Tuesday after a structural stability inspection was conducted on Monday.

The 17 people who died in the Bronx Fire, New York on Sunday, died from smoke inhalation according to the Office of the New York City Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).

The fire sent 32 people to hospitals with life-threatening conditions, New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Commissioner Daniel Nigro said Sunday.
