The Central Unit of the Northern District Police today (Tuesday) uncovered a public corruption case in the Real Estate Law Enforcement Unit in the Ministry of Finance, and in the Supervision Unit of the Lev Hagalil Planning and Construction Committee.
Following this, the police arrested two suspects, in their 40s, for offenses of accepting bribes, money laundering, fraud and breach of trust.
During the searches of their homes and offices, many documents were seized.
One of the suspects is a senior inspector in the Real Estate Enforcement Unit and the other is a supervisor of the local building planning committee.
The two will be brought to the Magistrate's Court in Nazareth in the coming hours to discuss the police's request to extend their detention.
A few months ago, an undercover investigation was opened after it was suspected that executives at both units had received bribes in exchange for canceling or preventing fines in the real estate field.
As part of the investigation, additional arrests are expected, including of the bribe-givers and of suspects in extortion with threats from the bribe-givers.
