The United States sanctioned six officials of Daniel Ortega's government on Monday hours before the Nicaraguan president took office for a fourth consecutive term.

In a statement, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury reported that among those sanctioned there are officials from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Defense, the Nicaraguan Institute of Telecommunications and Postal Services. (Telcor) and the state company Empresa Nicaragüense de Minas (Eniminas).

This means that "all assets and participations in assets of these people that are in the United States or that are in the power or under the control of US persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC," according to a statement.

According to the statement, the sanctions will not be permanent "but are issued with the purpose of motivating a positive change in behavior on the part of the identified persons and the authoritarian regime they support."

The European Union also adopted sanctions against the Ortega regime.

Daniel Ortega won the elections on November 7 after his government imprisoned several of his opponents.

The electoral process was criticized by the United States, the European Union, the Organization of American States and the United Nations, because they consider that there were no conditions for fair, democratic and well-observed elections.
