Geneva-Sana
Today, the United Nations requested a record amount of $5 billion to fund its assistance to Afghanistan this year, in light of the humanitarian catastrophe that the country is witnessing.
And the French press agency quoted the United Nations as saying in a statement that "financing its new plan requires 4.4 billion dollars from donor countries to provide humanitarian needs in Afghanistan for this year, in addition to an amount of 623 million dollars to help millions of Afghan refugees who have fled their country to neighboring countries."
The statement indicated that 22 million people inside Afghanistan and 5.7 million Afghans who have been displaced to neighboring countries need urgent assistance this year.
In turn, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths said, "A comprehensive humanitarian catastrophe is casting its shadows...My urgent message is do not close the door on the people of Afghanistan and help us avoid widespread hunger, disease, malnutrition and ultimately death."
Since the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in mid-August, after a two-decade occupation, this country has plunged into financial chaos amid high inflation and unemployment rates, in addition to that, it witnessed in 2021 the worst drought in decades.
