Under the guidance of President Bashar al-Assad, Prime Minister Hussein Arnous began a visit to Lattakia Governorate at the head of a government delegation to track the reality of citrus marketing and put into effect the procedures approved by the Council of Ministers in its session today.

The Chairman of the Council met with representatives of farmers, traders of Al-Hal Market, juice factories and exporters in the building of Latakia Governorate, in the presence of the Ministers of Local Administration, Environment, Public Works, Housing, Agriculture, Agrarian Reform, Internal Trade, Consumer Protection, and the governors of Lattakia and Tartous to find ways out of bottlenecks in the marketing of the season and in a manner that guarantees farmers’ rights.

Engineer Arnous stressed that the intervention will be in the interest of the farmers, and the state will bear the costs of transporting the citrus crop from the farmer’s land to all Syrian regions without being charged for the transportation of the crop and its transit between the governorates or any additional cost within the Syrian territory, expressing his hope that this will be reflected positively on the improvement in prices and the marketing of the product. .

He pointed out that the marketing of the citrus crop is currently confined to local markets because Western sanctions and external pressures affect the movement of Syrian exports, pointing out that there are many attempts and mediations to facilitate the export of citrus to foreign markets. response and we will continue our efforts to support our external marketing measures.”

Engineer Arnous asked the Syrian Trade Corporation to mobilize and work around the clock to put the procedures related to citrus marketing into practice, as of tomorrow, stressing that these procedures should be directly seen by the farmers.

At the request of some marketers, Eng. Arnous directed to take measures to complete the work of filling and sealing the refrigerators intended for export in the sorting and packaging centers in Lattakia Governorate by the relevant committees “Customs, Finance and Agriculture” without the need to reopen these refrigerators again.

The interventions of the participants in the meeting focused on the need to search for foreign markets and marine routes, support exporters and contribute to reducing the price of materials used in sorting and packaging centers to contribute to reducing the price of plastic containers and facilitating the movement of the financial mass for exporters and traders by raising the amounts allowed to be transferred between governorates and the establishment of a juice factory that contributes to containing Large quantities of citrus, in addition to compensating farmers as much as possible for the damages they sustained as a result of not marketing and spoiling their products, and facilitating the process of products reaching the market without additional costs.

In a statement to reporters after the meeting, Engineer Arnous said, "We will not allow farmers to lose their crops, and these citruses will be marketed at reasonable prices that give the cost plus a margin of profit," noting that the measures and decisions taken by the Council of Ministers, in addition to the proposals put forward by the participants in the meeting, come at the heart of directives Mr. President Bashar al-Assad in the delivery of support to farmers will be implemented directly.

Engineer Arnous stressed that the government has great confidence in the concerned local authorities to translate these procedures fully on the ground in cooperation with merchants and factory owners and to facilitate the transportation and marketing process.

For his part, the Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Eng. Hussein Makhlouf, indicated that the efforts of the local authorities in the governorates of Lattakia and Tartous will combine and integrate to make these procedures successful and to market the entire remaining crop, which will have a positive impact on farmers and consumers.

In turn, the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Eng. Suhail Abdel Latif, pointed out that the meeting today is a continuation of what was discussed in the Cabinet and the decisions it took in the framework of developing an integrated plan to support the marketing process, indicating that the Ministry of Works will put the necessary mechanisms in the service of the citrus transport process starting tomorrow morning in coordination With the authorities concerned with marketing the season directly from the farmers.

The Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Dr. Amr Salem pointed out that the Syrian Trade Corporation had a previous role in marketing citrus according to its capacity and available capabilities, noting that the quantities that were marketed during this year are equivalent to more than twice what was marketed during the past year, considering that the cessation of external export affected Negatively in the marketing process, stressing at the same time that the government, with these measures, puts all its capabilities at the service of the marketing process, starting from marketing the material from farmers' land to the governorates markets.

The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Muhammad Hassan Qatana, indicated that citrus production was about 777 thousand tons for this year, and there were some obstacles in marketing. of the season.”

He pointed to the importance of the reliability program implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, which depends on field inspection of farmers' fields and checking the extent of compliance with the application of specific standards for control, fertilization and pruning to adopt products that conform to quality standards and export standards, indicating that this program is being developed and the planting is distributed to standardize varieties at the level of each Field and application of these standards and the results of this program during the next year will be on the ground.
