According to the information of the Centre for Food Safety, the relevant candied date samples were purchased from the "upstairs" on the 11th floor of TOP Shopping Mall, No. 700 Nathan Road. The origin is China, with a net weight of 605 grams. November 15th.

The results of the relevant samples showed that they contained sulphur dioxide, although the level was lower than the maximum permissible level specified in the Preservatives in Food Regulations (Cap. 132BD), but the food labels of the samples did not indicate the name of the additive.

A spokesman for the Center for Food Safety stated that the merchants involved were informed of the above-mentioned violations and instructed them to stop selling and remove the affected batches of products from the shelves.

If there is sufficient evidence, the Centre will initiate prosecution.

The spokesman reminded the trade that the use of preservatives in food must comply with legal requirements. According to the Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations (Cap. 132W), all prepackaged food sold in Hong Kong containing more than one million 10/10 of sulfites, the function category and name of the relevant sulfites shall be specified in the ingredient list.

Offenders, upon conviction, can be fined up to $50,000 and jailed for six months.

Sulfur dioxide is a preservative that can be used in different types of food such as dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products.

Sulphur dioxide is soluble in water, and washing and cooking removes most of the sulphur dioxide from food.

However, people who are allergic to sulfur dioxide may experience symptoms such as wheezing, headache, or nausea after consuming it.
