The ailing A45 bridge near Lüdenscheid on a central north-south traffic axis drives the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, municipalities, businesses and residents.

The federal government promises speed, the state government promises relief.

Düsseldorf - Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has promised to accelerate the planning for the new construction of the ailing viaduct on the A45 near Lüdenscheid. Scholz announced this on Wednesday in a government survey in the Bundestag. In response to a question from FDP MP Bernd Reuther, the Chancellor replied that he could assure that the federal government had carefully discussed the issue. Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) reported to him how he wanted to proceed in concrete terms with regard to the demolition and “planning of new buildings as quickly as possible”.

Last Friday, the federal autobahn GmbH announced that the Rahmede bridge on the Sauerland line between the eastern Ruhr area and Frankfurt am Main must be demolished. Hopes for a renovation were thus dashed. The bridge on the important traffic axis between northern and southern Germany is closed. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, plans for a new building have started.

NRW Transport Minister Ina Brandes (CDU) emphasized in Düsseldorf that the badly affected region should be better relieved. Efforts are currently underway to shift more freight traffic to rail, as she described on Wednesday in the transport committee of the NRW state parliament. The aim is to provide acute relief for the companies in the region and at the same time see an opportunity for the future: a "permanent shift" of freight traffic to rail is "right and important" ".

Inner-city areas and residents should be further relieved, said Brandes in a question time. Among other things, one tries to ensure a better passage with more traffic lights and reprogrammed circuits and to keep alternate traffic out of Lüdenscheid in particular. The subject of express buses is also on the list to support commuters. "We check everything that is possible". The extensive diversion via other motorways led to significantly less traffic on the A45.

According to Brandes, this Friday the state and federal transport ministries and Autobahn GmbH want to advise on how a replacement bridge can be built on the important north-south traffic axis as quickly as possible. NRW is pushing for an accelerated demolition and new construction, she affirmed.

The CDU / CSU parliamentary group also called for quick action and specific deadlines.

The region has been hit hard, the important traffic artery will be massively impaired in the long term, said the transport policy spokesman Thomas Bareiß of the German press agency.

"This is a transport policy super-disaster."

At the same time, Scholz announced a general inventory of the condition of the motorway bridges.

Then you have to immediately start working hard to fix what needs to be repaired.

"It doesn't all happen overnight, but you have to start right and get started right so that it works," said the Chancellor.
