French police have arrested a man on suspicion of involvement in the murder of engineer Saad al-Hili, his wife, mother and another hiker in 2012 in the Alps.

French police today (Wednesday) arrested a suspect in the murder case of four hikers in 2012 that has become one of the biggest murder mysteries in the country.

French police provided few details about the arrest and claimed the man was brought in for questioning with the aim of "holding an inquiry as to his schedules on the day of the murder".

Relatives of the murder, which took place near the alpine resort town of Annecy, were an Iraqi satellite engineer with British citizenship, Saad al-Hili, his wife Akal al-Hili, his mother-in-law Suhila al-Alef.

In addition, a French cyclist who passed by the two daughters of the al-Hili couple, then aged four and seven, was also killed in the shooting, and were found hiding under a mother's body in the vehicle in which the family members were killed.

In 2020, the French police said that progress had been made in the investigation, but it was not clear whether the arrest that took place today was related to the same information.

At the time, there was a suspicion that al-Hili had been eliminated due to his work in the field of satellites, but no confirmation was ever received.

Also, a theory emerged that he was murdered due to a family dispute with his brother, but even the direction of this investigation yielded no results.
