Syria's ambassador to the Vatican, Husam El-Din Ala, discussed during his meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State in the Vatican City, bilateral relations and developments in Syria and the region.
Ambassador Ala and Cardinal Parolin reviewed the overall developments taking place in Syria and the great efforts made by the Syrian state to meet the basic needs of its citizens and facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland and homes.
And the obstacles it faces as a result of the unilateral coercive measures that affect the Syrian citizen's life and livelihood, noting Pope Francis' call in his speech before the diplomatic corps to put an end to the unjust sanctions that exacerbate the human suffering of the Syrian people.
Ala held the US and Turkish occupations responsible for prolonging the crisis in Syria and exacerbating human suffering, with the United States continuing to support "separatist militias" and sponsoring the theft of natural resources and smuggling them across the border to tighten the siege on Syria and the Turkish regime's continued support for terrorism and its use of water as a means of war in the areas it occupies.
Ala affirmed the Syrian government's keenness to restore stability by continuing with national reconciliations and completing the liberation of the Syrian land from terrorism and occupation, and its support for the work of the Constitution Discussion Committee under the leadership and ownership of Syria without outside interference.
For his part, Cardinal Parolin affirmed Pope Francis' keenness to end the suffering of the Syrian people by lifting economic sanctions, advancing the political track and the work of the Constitutional Committee.
Ambassador Ala had participated in the annual reception hosted by the Vatican in the presence of Pope Francis for ambassadors accredited on the occasion of the New Year.
