Caen: a "second first chance" for students deprived of exams because of the Covid

In the middle of the fifth wave of the Covid, the University of Caen is organizing substitution sessions for students who have missed one by

A gift in bad taste was invited under the tree of Adeline, a first year law student in Caen.

“I was infected with the Covid at Christmas.

At that time, we had to respect ten days of isolation, so I understood that it would be too fair for my partial the week of the start of the school year ”.

Face-to-face history of law and economics tests, in the midst of the first semester exams campaign.

A hard blow that even earned the young woman this reflection: "At the beginning, we wonder if we are not going to go anyway".

Because the fear of the students was that their absence would oblige them to have to come to the catch-ups.

"If it had been that, I think I would have gone to my exams," adds Adeline.

No need, after all.

Because like other establishments, the University of Caen organizes replacement sessions for those who could not have taken the tests due to contamination or precautionary isolation.

"We have identified between 20 and 30 absences linked to the epidemic"

"Three quarters of the partial took place in December and we identified between 20 and 30 absences linked to the epidemic," says Lamri Adoui, the president of the faculty. But this month, it's harder ”. The remedial sessions, dedicated to giving students "a second first chance", began at the start of the school year for those absent in December. Those at the start of the year will be called upon to compose in February, with the same right to catch-ups in the event of a slightly correct score.

This effort by the University is decisive for the students.

"We cannot take the risk of not having our year because of the Covid", pleads Adeline.

And sending them directly to the catch-ups could have harmed their file in the future, underlines Lamri Adoui: "Selective training can reveal that a candidate has gone to the catch-ups".

The establishment therefore hammered home the message in order to reassure its troops and perhaps avoid the arrival of sick students in partial.

"But given the number of questions that we receive, we will have to communicate again", slips Lamri Adoui.

Also read in Panthéon-Sorbonne, they will take their exams in lecture halls even if they have the Covid

The substitution sessions may take another form than the initial partials. Orals are for example considered, if only a few candidates, for example, are concerned. "We will make sure to test the same knowledge to preserve equality", assures the president of the University. These setbacks may still "have an impact", according to Adeline, the first year student. “In law, we are used to writing a lot. If the written word becomes oral, many of us will be unsettled, because they are not used to it and less comfortable ”.

This partials campaign will also stretch over time.

Adeline is waiting for the email which will inform her of the terms of her substitution session.

She will reorganize her reviews, which will be in addition to certain personal commitments, made before she fell ill.

"It's long and quite boring," sighs the young woman.

In the worst case, these students held back by the Covid will still be entitled to catch-ups.

A first relief.
