In the fight against food waste, the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament wants to establish a nutrition driving license as compulsory material in all primary schools by the school year 2023/24.

This was decided by the MPs at their parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday, as the German press agency learned.

In addition, the basic knowledge of cooking and awareness of food waste should be anchored more firmly in the curriculum, according to a corresponding position paper.

Stuttgart - In addition, the use of cookery school buses is to be expanded nationwide.

State-owned canteens and cafeterias are also to be obliged to provide take-away options for leftover food or to enable food to be handed over to tables.

"When it comes to high-quality food, we live in a real land of milk and honey," said CDU parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel of the dpa.

“Unfortunately, however, it is also a reality that our appreciation for our food has been suffering for years as a result.” Every year, twelve million tons in Germany would simply be thrown away.

"We Christian Democrats believe that food waste is neither ethically, nor economically nor ecologically justifiable." According to the position paper, the majority of food waste is produced in private households (52 percent).

In the paper, the CDU parliamentary group also calls for a command from food retailers to pass on unsold food to the food banks or other aid organizations.

The MPs want to campaign for a corresponding Federal Council initiative in the near future.

The labels for the shelf life on food would also have to change - such as in Norway (“Best before, but not bad, after”), it says in the paper.

The CDU parliamentary group wanted to urge the EU Commission in its plan to completely dispense with a best-before date for non-perishable foods.
