Two young women from Mannheim were probably among the victims of the sexual assault on New Year's Eve on Milan Cathedral Square.
The two students were interrogated by the police in Mannheim on Tuesday, the police announced on Wednesday - without giving any specific information.
The descriptions would be sent to the Italian colleagues in anticipation of an anticipated request for legal assistance.
Mannheim - The contact with the 20-year-olds came about via a search call from the Italian police on the Internet.
A friend of the women heard this and informed the authorities in Italy and Germany.
The Italian police are investigating 18 suspects for sex offenses against a total of nine women - all of whom are Italian citizens.
