After the death of EU Parliament President David Sassoli, AfD MEP Nicolaus Fest is said to have insulted him in a Whatsapp group with derogatory words.

As the ARD capital studio reports, Fest wrote in the group in which the AfD MPs in the European Parliament exchange ideas: "This bastard is finally gone." The report says that screenshots are available.

The former deputy editor-in-chief of “Bild am Sonntag” also dubbed Sassoli an “anti-democrat, a shame for every parliamentary idea”.

Meuthen: "repulsive and inexcusable"

When asked by the dpa news agency on Wednesday, Fest said he did not confirm anything.

On Facebook he wrote that the picture drawn in statements and obituaries about Sassoli was incomplete.

And then criticized: "It is regrettable that screenshots of this internal communication were punctured."

AfD boss Jörg Meuthen told the ARD capital studio: "Such a statement about a colleague who has just died after a serious illness is disturbing, deeply repugnant and inexcusable."

Meuthen's office announced that the said message had only been in the Whatsapp group for a few minutes.

Meuthen intervened immediately and it was deleted.

The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Katarina Barley, said according to the ARD report, "Mr. Fest's statements are indicative of their originator and that contempt for human beings, which Sassoli has always resolutely opposed."

It would not be the first time that AfD officials caused a stir because of posts in messenger services.

Last December, Bayerischer Rundfunk reported on an AfD-internal group of the messenger Telegram, in which numerous extremist slogans and calls were exchanged between the end of 2017 and mid-2021 - including revolutionary fantasies and the rejection of elections.

According to the report, 16 of the 18 Bavarian state parliament and eleven of the twelve members of the Bundestag, as well as 10 of 13 members of the AfD state executive elected in October, were represented.

In response, among other things, the AfD MP Johannes Huber resigned from the party.
