The Mexican Government has begun this Wednesday the application of the booster dose of the vaccine against covid-19 for educational personnel, at a time when the country is going through a rebound in infections and millions of parents have decided not to send their children to school despite the fact that the school year has already started. Delfina Gómez, Secretary of Public Education, has affirmed that 2,686,320 Moderna vaccines will be applied to workers in public and private schools, in an effort to protect a vulnerable sector from the pandemic.

The vaccination will last until January 16 in 30 entities of the country, since the States of Baja California and Colima concluded the process on January 8 and 9. Of the total doses to be applied, Mexico City will receive 270,000; the State of Mexico, 315,000; Jalisco, 161,000; Puebla, 129,000 and Nuevo León, 126.00. Gómez has explained that they will be administered for all educational personnel, from teachers, cleaners to administrative personnel, both in public and private schools.

The vaccination process occurs in the midst of a rebound in covid-19 infections in Mexico, which registered a new statistical record on Tuesday, with 33,626 new cases of covid-19, which are added to the 171,329 active cases, that is, , those that have been detected in the last 14 days.

The most affected region is Mexico City, which accounts for 16% of all cases, with 45,477 infections.

This rebound and the fear of the omicron variant have clouded the return to classes in the country.

Gómez has reported that there is a 42.8% reduction in students in school classrooms.

“The attendance of students has been reduced precisely.

Right now we have an approximate of about 17.5 million [out of a total of 25 million].

It has been a difficult process because there is fear and uncertainty ”,

has explained. “Institutions have been asked to keep schools open, except for some very extreme situations. There are teachers who are teaching virtually and right now we have an average face-to-face of 1,800,000 teachers, ”said the official.

Despite the fear of parents for the increase in infections, educational authorities encourage students to go to schools.

"The back-to-school plan continues," said the Secretary of Education.

“For the children, coexistence is very important, they already wanted to return to [face-to-face] classes, because it makes it easier for them to learn directly.

While 'Learn at Home' was important, this program does not replace the relationship they have with a teacher and with their peers.

That is why we will continue with the return to classes, but we will be respectful of the decisions that each State makes, but I ask that we not fall into the panic of wanting to lock ourselves up ”, he has settled.
