Alain Minc, essayist and former supporter of Emmanuel Macron, announced this Wednesday morning in an interview with Le
Point
that he now supports Valérie Pécresse for the presidential election of 2022. He justifies this decision by the fact that the Head of State , if he is re-elected, would not manage, according to him, to obtain a “
majority at the orders
” in the legislative elections of June, and would therefore expose himself to cohabitation.
Conversely, he considers, the candidate LR, more likely to see his troops land in force at the National Assembly.

However, if he dreams of a second round between Emmanuel Macron and Valérie Pécresse - and affirms that he would then vote for the candidate LR -, Alain Minc weighs his support by explaining that he intends, in the first round, "
to vote for the one of the two who has the least certainty of being qualified in the second round
”
.
“
Today, it's Valérie Pécresse. I will therefore vote for it. And if the situation was reversed in early April, I would vote Macron for the same reason
, ”he warns. Objective assumed: to provoke a second round between the outgoing president and the patroness of the Île-de-France region, thus avoiding the presence in the final of those he calls “
populists
” or “
extremists ”
".

Although he admits that Emmanuel Macron "
has managed the health crisis particularly well from January 2021
", and also succeeded in "
deeply transforming France
", Alain Minc nevertheless regrets the fact that the Head of State does not present not today a well-defined project.
"
If he arrives naked in the presidential election, it is because he did not know how to build a party and alliances
", judges the essayist.
"
I believe that electing a woman to the supreme office would be extremely powerful progress for French society
", finally believes Alain Minc, who has not always bet on the right horses until now.
Defender of Édouard Balladur in the first round in 1995, then of Lionel Jospin in the second, he had not at the time seen Jacques Chirac coming.
Likewise, adviser to Nicolas Sarkozy from 2007, he then joined Alain Juppé in 2015, without imagining that François Fillon would be appointed by the LR primary a year later.
Hence his rallying to Emmanuel Macron, in January 2017, then praising his ability to reform the country.
With, this time, a happy ending for his champion ... Who is not anymore today.
