Russian New Year: between Orthodox traditions and pagan rites

These moments of rejoicing and celebration, beyond religious rites, are also an opportunity to discover many dishes.


On the night of January 13-14, Russians celebrate what they call the old New Year, in accordance with the Julian calendar in effect until the October Revolution of 1917. For those who observe this "popular" holiday but not religious, it is a repetition on a smaller scale of December 31 - the presidential speech, the twelve strokes of midnight on the Kremlin clock and the fireworks less.

The old New Year having been remembered, the two holidays coexist even if, unlike January 1, the 14th is not a public holiday in Russia.

On January 13, we therefore emerge on the family table - this is where everything is played, and not in the restaurant - the great classics: Olivier salad (mixed vegetables with mayonnaise), salmon eggs, jellied meat and Champagne Russian.

In some regions, koutia is also prepared, a typical Slavic dish made from wheat seeds, nuts and raisins, which is also served at funerals.
