United States: bonus limited to cars produced by unionized workers

A controversial bill provides that the maximum tax credit will be reserved for buyers of vehicles assembled by workers from the single union in the sector, a staunch ally and major contributor to the Democratic Party.


By wanting to kill two birds with one stone, Joe Biden gave his opponents one more argument to block Congress' big social Build Back Better bill.

Canada and Mexico are not the only ones to speak out against its proposed tax credits for buyers of electric vehicles.

According to the project, the maximum aid will be reserved for vehicles assembled by American union workers.

A measure deemed contrary to the North American Free Trade Agreement by Ottawa and Mexico, discriminatory, counterproductive, contrary to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) or even unconstitutional, by foreign manufacturers.

The latter certainly assemble their vehicles in the United States, but all employ non-unionized labor.
