A 17-year-old Palestinian man who was staying in Israel illegally was arrested earlier this week at the end of a chase after him who allegedly stole a private car.

During the chase he was driving in opposition to traffic when he escaped from the police car.

In his defense, he claimed that he was used to traveling without a license and did not know that in Israel it is forbidden to travel in the way he did.

He was arrested and an indictment was filed against him yesterday (Wednesday) by the Jerusalem Police Prosecution Department.

The incident began on Sunday morning, when the 100th district of the Jerusalem district received a call from the Ituran company about a vehicle stolen in the Gilo neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Following the report, police forces began locating the vehicle around the city, until Moriah police officers who conducted searches located the vehicle miraculously in front of them, and began driving after it while reporting on the communications network about the direction of its escape.

During the incident, the vehicle drove more than once in violation of traffic laws while driving fast, in violation of the direction of traffic.

In the midst of the escapes, the suspected driver noticed police forces blocking his way near the crossing checkpoint in the direction of Gush Etzion.

After being blocked, the suspect decided to make a U-turn and continue fleeing on the tunnel road back towards the center of Jerusalem.

Later, he got on with the vehicle he stole on spikes deployed by police and was stopped with the vehicle.

At this point, the police got out of their vehicle and arrested him.

During the search of the vehicle, officers located burglary tools.

The suspect's investigation revealed that he was an illegal Palestinian resident, a 17-year-old resident of Ramallah, and he was taken for questioning at the Moriah station in the Jerusalem district.

His detention was extended in court at the beginning of the week and as stated, last night the police prosecution filed an indictment against him and a request for his detention until the end of the proceedings.
