British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's "Partygate" affair is having its first effects, according to British polls - and is increasingly costing Johnson's ruling Conservative Party support.

According to a survey by the polling institute Yougov commissioned by The Times newspaper, the opposition Labor Party's lead over Johnson's Tories grew to ten percentage points - the largest difference since December 2013.

Some Tory MPs, including Douglas Ross, the head of the Scottish Conservatives, have already publicly called on the prime minister to resign.

Johnson apologized in the House of Commons on Wednesday for a garden party on Downing Street during the first corona lockdown in May 2020.

He assumed it was a working meeting.

In retrospect, this was wrong.

"A shame"

The alleged working meeting was not invited in this way.

Johnson's office manager had invited about 100 employees to the meeting by email and emphasized: "Bring your own alcohol." The opposition is calling for Johnson's resignation.

The Daily Mirror newspaper called the prime minister "a shame" on its front page today.

As the Times reported, Johnson was defiant in conversations with party colleagues.

He is said to have said at a meeting that he did not do anything wrong personally.

With his apology, Johnson bought time, commented the paper.

Nevertheless, the party’s internal resistance is great.

"It's over.

It is indefensible and it is amazing how little support he has within the group, "the newspaper quoted a cabinet member as saying.

Johnson has not expressly ruled out a resignation.

He asked to await the outcome of an ongoing internal investigation into several alleged lockdown parties on Downing Street.
