Assault on the Capitol: lawyer does not see good future for Trump 1:01

(CNN) -

Donald Trump is nothing but unpredictable.

On Tuesday, he did a telephone interview with National Public Radio (NPR), which has to be one of the most unlikely combinations of media and politicians in a long time.

But, Trump was, as always, Trump.

After about 10 minutes on the call, Trump hung up on NPR's Steve Inskeep when the host repeatedly pressured Trump about his false claim that the 2020 election had been stolen from him.

I went through the transcript and pulled out the Trump quotes you need to see.

They are downstairs.

(Annotation: Why amplify, or cover, Trump's pronouncements? Simple. He's giving every indication that he wants to run again for president in 2024, and all the polls suggest he would be a huge favorite for the nomination. If that were In the case of any more "normal" politician, we would cover all his pronouncements. The mere fact that Trump is Trump does not mean that we can - or should - ignore what he says. We need to cover him - and, when necessary, that he always is. provide context and fact-checking).

Biden lashes out at Trump a year after the assault on Capitol 3:30

1. "Are we going to be live, Steve? Are we going to, eh?"

advertising

The interview was prerecorded.

So they weren't going to be live.

(In other news: "We will do it live!") And here we go!

2. "Well, first of all, the mandate is really hurting our country."

Inskeep's question: "What advice would you give to Americans who have not chosen to get vaccinated?"

So, uh, yeah.

3. "And being the very ... the proud person who did so well with the therapies and the vaccines and everything else and did it in record time, you know, I have a lot to say on the subject."

I think

Trump is trying to point out that a) he is vaccinated and has the booster shot and b) when he contracted COVID-19, he benefited from treatments to treat it.

4. "If some people don't want to, they shouldn't have to wear them. They can't be forced, as the expression says. And I think that's very important."

Inskeep pressed Trump on what advice he would give to the unvaccinated.

This is what the former president came up with.

Also, there is no saying that says "cannot be required."

5. "Personally, I feel very comfortable having taken them. I have had absolutely no reverb."

Vaccines!

Now with less reverb!

6. "I don't know why they would be getting the vaccine for the most part, unless they were in a certain age group and had certain problems, be it high blood pressure, diabetes, and, you know, various things in particular.

Trump is talking about people who have already contracted the virus here and arguing, against science, that they probably don't need to be vaccinated.

Also, diabetes [Wilford Brimley voice].

7. "If you look at the numbers, if you look at the findings in Arizona, if you look at what's going on in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, by the way, and take a look at Wisconsin, it's finding things that nobody thought possible."

[voice of narrator] They are not.

Heck, even the bleak "tally" of the ballots in Maricopa County in Arizona showed that Biden would still have won.

8. "The number of ballots does not mean anything."

Oh ...

9. "Look at the number of votes. Go to Detroit and ask yourself, is it true that there are more votes than voters?"

I asked myself this.

Then I read this verified fact and learned that there were NO more votes cast in Detroit than there were people.

How did I discover this revealing and critical fact?

A secret weapon that I call "a Google search".

Check it out.

Life change.

10. "Take a look at Detroit."

I

literally

just did that!

11. "Because Mitch McConnell is a loser."

The question?

"Why do you think the vast majority of your allies in the US Senate are not backing you [on voter fraud]?"

Just a note here: McConnell has won seven Senate races over a period of nearly 40 years.

McConnell is also the longest-serving Republican leader in history.

But I digress ...

12. "Take a look at what's going on in Pennsylvania right now."

I did it.

And I don't think it proves the point that Trump is trying to make.

13. "Take a look at what's going on in Wisconsin. Just take a look."

Again, I did it.

And I found that a conservative group's reexamination of the 2020 Wisconsin ballot found that "there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud."

14. "In fact, they say, and I can't testify because it's been through many systems, many different systems. But they say, and they say it very strongly, the judges just ... no one has had a chance to look."

How?

15. "I said, wait a minute. I'm the president of the United States. They just rigged an election. Hundreds of thousands of votes in different states. They just rigged an election."

Whether you are President of the United States or not, this statement is false.

There is simply no evidence of widespread voter fraud, whether at the national or state level, in the 2020 elections.

16. "We obtained, we obtained a number of votes that, I think you will agree, no incumbent president has obtained the number of votes that I obtained."

This is true!

It is also misleading.

With America's population continuing to grow, it makes sense that Trump would get more votes than the last incumbent president who oversaw a country with fewer people!

Additionally, Trump garnered 74 million votes.

The problem is, Joe Biden made $ 81 million.

17. "Do you think Biden got 80 million votes? Because I don't."

Well, given all the evidence you've cited to prove ... oh, wait.

18. "How come Biden couldn't draw 20 people for a crowd? How come when he went to speak at different places, no one came to look, but all of a sudden he got 80 million votes?"

Reminder: The 2020 elections ended 435 days ago.

And Trump keeps talking about the size of the crowd.

19. "People have no idea how big this problem is and they don't want it to happen again."

Well, the "people" have no idea how big the electoral fraud problem is and they don't want it to happen again.

Does it seem contradictory?

20. "So Steve, thank you very much. Thank you."

That's the last Trump said before hanging up on Inskeep.

And yes, this feels like a good place to end.
