GAP - People with diabetes need multidisciplinary treatment in specialized centers, clinics or practices. In order to ensure high quality care, the German Diabetes Society (DDG) certifies the facilities that meet high, defined requirements. The German Center for Child and Adolescent Rheumatology and the associated diabetes ambulance at the Social Pediatric Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen have received the DDG certificate as a “Certified Diabetes Center DDG”.

Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disease in children and adolescents. The disease cannot be cured, but it can be treated well with insulin. Current insulin pumps with continuous application allow a high degree of independence and normalcy in everyday life. However, living with diabetes remains a challenge with numerous peculiarities that demand a special degree of discipline and self-management from children and their environment.

The German Center for Child and Adolescent Rheumatology and the associated diabetes ambulance at the Social Pediatric Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen have been re-certified as a “Certified Diabetes Center DDG”. Diabetologist Dr. Katharina Köstner explains: “The certification of the DDG shows us and our little patients that our treatment in all areas - therapy, advice and training - corresponds to today's scientific knowledge. That gives them security and for us and our team it is at the same time recognition for the work we have to do on a daily basis. "

In the guidelines of specialist societies such as the DDG, the current recommendations for the treatment of diabetes in clinics and practices are scientifically established. From these guidelines, the DDG has also derived the guidelines for the certification of specialized treatment facilities for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. If a facility receives one of the DDG certificates, patients can be sure that they will be treated optimally in this clinic or practice, i.e. in accordance with guidelines. The certification is thus a "seal of quality" and serves as a guide in the search for the appropriate treatment.

The DDG distinguishes between two categories: "Certified Diabetes Center DDG" and "Certified Diabetes Center Diabetologikum DDG with diabetes-specific quality management". To be certified, the facility must demonstrate experience, i.e. having treated 200 people with type 2 diabetes and / or 50 people with type 1 diabetes per quarter in accordance with the guidelines. This applies to the outpatient area. In the inpatient area, these numbers relate to one year. The DDG has been awarding this certification for diabetes treatment facilities in clinics and practices since 2005. Currently, the Quality Assurance CommitteeTraining and further education (QSW) of the DDG around 400 facilities are certified as "Certified Diabetes Center DDG" and around 100 as "Certified Diabetes Center Diabetologikum DDG with diabetes-specific quality management".

Further general information on the certificate, certification, an application form and a checklist can be found at www.ddg.info or requested from the DDG office.
