Corona vaccinations: dentists and pharmacists can "make a big contribution"

Back in November, the Bavarian Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek (CSU), declared that dentists and pharmacists “can make a big contribution to vaccinating as many people as quickly and as easily as possible”.

“There are still a few unanswered questions,” says Berger, who is the President of the Bavarian State Dental Association (BLZK).

The vaccination ordinance must be supplemented, and there are also ambiguities in terms of liability, the transmission of vaccinations to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and billing.

But he emphasizes: “We are in an exceptional situation.

Many colleagues, including myself, will not first ask how much money we will get for a vaccination. "

Munich: Dentists get a corona vaccination training

Dentists have a lot of experience with injections and hygiene concepts.

In order to be allowed to vaccinate, however, they also need theoretical and practical training.

"For example, it is about the correct implementation of the vaccination and the handling of the vaccine," says occupational physician Matthias Hajek, who conducts the training.

“This ensures quality.” The dentists are also prepared for emergencies.

The first two courses are already fully booked with 400 participants.

At the Bavarian Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists, around 1,000 of the 8,000 dentists in Bavaria have agreed to vaccinate against corona.

Berger hopes that the vaccinations can start in the practices at the end of January: "Every day earlier is a blessing," he says.

Currently one of the most critical phases of the pandemic is.

The number of cases is also increasing rapidly in Munich, yesterday the incidence was 596.8 according to the RKI.

"The more vaccination offers we offer, the greater the willingness to vaccinate," explains Christian Berger.

There have already been many inquiries in his practice in Kempten.

Not everyone wants to be given the injection by an unknown doctor at the vaccination center and not everyone has a family doctor.

“But almost everyone has a dentist,” he says.

"Vaccination is also a matter of trust."

The focus in dental practices will initially be on booster vaccinations.

Adults and adolescents from the age of twelve are vaccinated.

Appointments are usually necessary.

According to a survey, the Bavarian Pharmacists' Association estimates that a quarter to a third of pharmacies will take part.

In Munich that would be around 80 to 110 pharmacies.

"A few details still have to be settled," says spokesman Thomas Metz.

In addition, the pharmacists still have to be trained.

Metz estimates that the first corona vaccinations will start in February.

“It is always advisable to make an appointment,” he explains.

“The pharmacies have to plan capacity and staff.” As with dentists, vaccinations in pharmacies must be at least twelve years old.
