Looking for solace in isolation: a significant increase in the purchase of alcohol and cigars Israel today

2022-01-13T21:22:52.236Z

As in the first wave: Israelis buy and store more • In the wine industry they report: "Tens of percent increase in sales" • One explanation: The rise in the price of sugary drinks leads many to buy more alcohol

These days, when thousands of people are in isolation, they tend to look for a source of comfort.

It turns out that this comfort is expressed in the increased purchase of alcohol, and even of various cigars.

So says Philo, vice president of the Hermitage chain, which offers spirits and wines, and has nine branches across the country.

"We're feeling a significant increase in sales recently, since people are under pressure to be tested and are in isolation. This is an increase of more than 30%, mainly in the wine category," says Filo.

He adds: "It reminds us of the initial period of the Corona, so people agro and bought more. When people are afraid of infection, they prepare for the option of isolation. Consumers buy not only beer or vodka, but also cocktails and cigars. Those who go into isolation want to pamper themselves If he buys whiskey, he chooses quality, like Glenmorangie and McAllen. There is an increase of at least 24% compared to last year in the purchase of liquor.

"The rise in prices is very variable, and not all products have risen in price. The wines are expected to rise in price soon. Israeli wines have already risen in price by 12%, and foreign-made wines have not risen in price. The rise in prices has made people buy less.

"For example, due to the taxation on soft drinks, people buy less at the supermarket. Now a six-pack of Coca-Cola costs NIS 50-45 following the taxation, so they will buy fewer bottles at the supermarket, and more wines with us for three bottles for NIS 100."

The Bana Beverages chain also notices an increase of tens of percent in all categories and areas.

According to Penny Bachar, the company's marketing director: "We have seen an increase in the supply of alcohol in stores, as well as in deliveries.

"Following the chain's promotions, the increase in the number of bottles per purchase in stores is noticeable. People are more at home, and as a result, consumption has increased by tens of percent."

Bachar added: "There is a continuous increase in the wine category, and we expect it to continue, along with a 32% increase in the whiskey and cognac categories, which are consumed mainly in the cold months of the year."
