(CNN) --
A woman and a child were injured Thursday when multiple rockets hit Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, including the US embassy, the US embassy and the Iraqi military said in statements.
"The US embassy compound was attacked tonight by terrorist groups attempting to undermine Iraq's security, sovereignty and international relations," the US embassy said in the statement.
"We have long said that these types of reprehensible attacks are an assault not only on diplomatic facilities but also on Iraq's sovereignty," the embassy added.
The Iraqi army said "a cowardly terrorist act" targeted "innocent residents of the Green Zone in Baghdad and the headquarters of diplomatic missions."
Several missiles were launched from the Dora neighborhood in southern Baghdad, the army said.
