The S-Bahn in Munich was often late in 2021.

There are likely to be problems for passengers in 2022 as well.

There are many construction projects on the main route.

Munich - The construction site timetable for the S-Bahn does not bode well this year: There are regular line closures again, at Easter and Whitsun even for almost a whole week.

The retailers in downtown Munich are horrified!

The S-Bahn has a long-lasting form of weakness.

The Bavarian Railway Company has now determined on behalf of the Free State that only 92.7 percent of all S-Bahn trains were less than three minutes late in 2021.

In 2020 the value was 95 percent.

Due to the series of incidents last autumn, the bad value is not really a surprise.

Munich: S-Bahn 2021 even less punctual than the year before

"It feels like the punctuality is significantly lower," says the traffic expert for the Greens in the state parliament, Markus Büchler.

Technology, track systems and signal boxes are partly outdated or overloaded.

“Expansion and modernization were slipped through for decades,” complains Büchler.

However, a lack of construction activity can no longer be blamed on the railway in 2022, as a look at the construction site calendar shows.

Again there are many weekends during which the main route is completely or partially closed.

S-Bahn Munich: The dates of the partial and full closures in 2022

  • The inspection of the existing S-Bahn tunnel has already started.

The tunnel can only be used on a single track from 10.40 p.m. until March 29th.

  • Rails in the tunnel are replaced on two weekends.

From January 28th to 31st and February 4th to 7th there will be no S-Bahn between Ostbahnhof and Hackerbrücke.

  • On five other weekends between February and August (Saturday to Sunday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., dates not yet known) and numerous nights from 10.40 p.m., the route between Pasing and Donnersbergerbrücke will only be accessible on a single track.

  • Easter and Whitsun is the name of the game at Bahn Bauen.

On Maundy Thursday (April 14th), the Laim-Pasing line will only be passable on a single track.

The S-Bahn between Donnersbergerbrücke and Pasing will be completely canceled over the long Easter weekend from April 14th at 10:40 p.m. to April 19 at 4:40 a.m.

The same has been announced for the period around Pentecost (June 3rd from 10:40 p.m. to June 7th at 4:40 a.m.).

  • On May 13th to 16th and October 21st to 24th, Deutsche Bahn will insert two more so-called maintenance weekends.

Then there is only one rail replacement service between Pasing and Ostbahnhof - in other words: you have to use the subway, tram or bus.

Construction work on S-Bahn routes in Munich - retail fears fewer customers

There are many reasons for the construction work: In addition to the repair of existing track systems, the construction of the second main line is also mentioned.

This year, the new construction of the Laim train station is a focus.

The retailers in the city center are struggling with the flood of construction sites: “It's huge again,” says Wolfgang Fischer from the CityPartner interest group.

On the construction weekends, many customers from the S-Bahn region would avoid the city center.

Saturdays are the days with the highest turnover.

Once again, Fischer warns that the city and the railways should come up with something - such as the free use of replacement traffic on construction site days.

However, the railway had already rejected this request in 2021.
