The 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was held last week, and the most surprising news may come from Japan's Sony Group. In addition to exhibiting a new generation of car prototypes, it also announced that it will set up a new company to enter smart electric vehicles.

At CES two years ago, Sony surprisingly showed off their first prototype EV, the VISION-S.

The concept car was jointly developed with Magna, an auto OEM, and Robert Bosch, an auto parts giant. Sony said at the time that it had no plans to mass-produce or sell Sony cars.

Two years later, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said at CES in Las Vegas last week: "The excitement about VISION-S after showing it has really encouraged us to think further about how we can leverage creativity and technology. , changing the travel experience of moving from one place to another.” This time, Sony renamed the VISION-S prototype VISION-S 01 and exhibited another seven-seat SUV (SUV) VISION-S 02.

The VISION-S offers a glimpse into how Sony intends to combine its technological strengths with the vision of the car of the future.

Yoshida said VISION-S will be built on safety, adaptability and entertainment.

On the one hand, in terms of safety, Sony is still touting with its image sensing technology. A total of 40 sensors are installed inside and outside the VISION-S to ensure driving safety.

At present, it only has the second level of autonomous driving capability, which is basically assisted driving, and the ultimate goal is the fourth level.

On the other hand, Sony's electric vehicles will not be limited to driving tools.

In particular, when autonomous driving is truly possible someday, interior space should take on a new meaning for passengers who no longer need to drive, and for Sony, entertainment.

According to Yoshida, “VISION-S will transform travel into an entertainment space, including our 360 Reality Audio live sound technology, gaming experience and Bravia Core streaming platform for VISION-S, a fully integrated digital video Serve."

On the VISION-S, in addition to a screen for each passenger, the seat is also equipped with a stereo sound system. The system also supports game streaming and can be connected to PlayStation game consoles remotely.

In addition to the hardware already mentioned, the related content is probably inseparable from Sony's territory. After all, it has singers, movies (such as the "Spider-Man" series), and game developers.

"With our imaging and sensing technologies, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies, plus our mastery of the content industry, we believe Sony has the edge to redefine mobility as a creative entertainment company," said Yoshida.
