Allergic diseases such as nasal allergy, eczema and asthma plague many Hong Kong school children. The Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong and the United Christian Hospital conducted a survey and found that the number of primary school students suffering from eczema and nasal allergies is higher than that in 18 years.

Allergic diseases such as nasal allergy, eczema and asthma plague many Hong Kong school children.

The Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong and the United Christian Hospital conducted a survey and found that the number of primary school students suffering from eczema and nasal allergy was more than 10 percentage points higher than that of the 2004 study 18 years ago. The incidence is also higher than the survey results 25 years ago.

The study believes that the rise in allergies is not only related to eating more processed foods and climate change, or it may be related to the reduction of outdoor activities under the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong, Chen Kaixin, together with Paediatric and Adolescent Doctors Lu Zhigang and Zheng Zhengxi of United Christian Hospital, according to the code of the Research Survey of Allergies in Children (ISAAC), 18 years and 24 years apart, to 6 in Hong Kong. Elementary school children to 7 years old, and secondary school children 13 to 14 years old, to investigate the incidence of sensitive diseases.

For primary schools, the research team interviewed Primary 1 and Primary 2 children and their parents in 19 primary schools from February to July last year, and analyzed 1,165 pieces of data.

The results showed that the incidence rates of eczema, asthma, rhinitis and nasal allergy were 41.6%, 5.5%, 59.4% and 46.1% respectively. Compared with the last survey data in 2004, only the incidence of asthma decreased, and the rest were all the same. There was an increase of more than 10 percentage points, with the highest increase in the incidence of rhinitis from 42.4% to 59.4%, that is, nearly 60% of the primary school children surveyed suffered from rhinitis.

Nearly 10% of students suffered from eczema in the past year

The study also analyzed the online questionnaire data of 1,083 secondary school children and secondary school children. The incidence rates of eczema, asthma, rhinitis and nasal allergy were 26.5%, 6.1%, 62.0% and 47.4%, respectively. According to a survey conducted in 1997, apart from the decrease in asthma, the incidence of eczema and rhinitis both increased, and 10.4% of the students indicated that they had suffered from eczema in the past year.

Epidemic pressure coupled with less going out may lead to an increase in the incidence of eczema

The study pointed out that the increase in the incidence of allergic diseases among primary and secondary school children may also be related to the new crown epidemic, in addition to eating more processed foods, rising obesity rates and climate change.

The study pointed out that the stress caused by the epidemic, coupled with the reduction of going out, may lead to an increase in the incidence of eczema, and wearing a mask or other behavioral changes during the epidemic may also affect the incidence of rhinitis and asthma.

Sensitive issues not only make students feel uncomfortable, but also affect the psychological conditions of students and their parents.

The study found that the more sensitive the nose of primary school children, the more likely parents are to be anxious, depressed, and have trouble sleeping.

Eczema is recurring and unpredictable, making it even more challenging for parents.
