While the corona pandemic is picking up speed again, boosting is becoming more and more important.

The rules for this vary depending on the state and cause confusion.

Munich - A booster vaccination can significantly increase protection against the coronavirus.

Studies emphasize that the previous vaccines are less effective against the highly contagious and increasingly dominant omicron variant, but at the same time they attribute a central role to the booster vaccination in increasing antibodies against the virus and ensuring better protection.

Politicians in Germany are also drawing attention to the importance of the booster.

The problem: it failed to create a uniform regulation.

Rather, the rules vary depending on the federal state and create a powerful chaos of measures.

Booster vaccination: Some federal states are lifting the 14-day period - the third vaccination is valid immediately after the injection

In the confusion about the booster vaccination, one issue is the period of validity of the third vaccination.

The 14-day period is already known from the second vaccination.

Accordingly, 14 days must first expire after the vaccination in order to be considered fully vaccinated.

So far, the same regulation has also existed for booster vaccinations.

However, several federal states have recently pushed ahead and have lifted the deadline for the booster validity.

This includes countries such as Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

There you are considered boosted immediately after the injection and have immediate access to 2G-Plus areas without the obligation to test.

In Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia you still have to wait 2 weeks.

Booster Vaccination: The Problem With Johnson & Johnson - How Many Vaccinations For Boosted Status?

The fact that Johnson & Johnson's vaccine is given in one single dose creates additional confusion for people who have been vaccinated with the vaccine.

Because not in all federal states a vaccination with Johnson & Johnson is the same as two vaccinations with, for example BioNTech, although the former is a vaccine with only one dose.

In Bavaria and Thuringia, after the first vaccination with Johnson & Johnson, you still need two more injections with a different vaccine in order to be considered boosted.

In the rest of the federal states, only one further vaccination is sufficient.

Bavaria relies on the Standing Vaccination Commission to classify the Johnson & Johnson vaccination.

The Stiko describes a second vaccination after Johnson & Johnson only as "optimization of the basic immunization".

Only a third vaccination counts as “complete basic immunization”.

A spokeswoman for the Bavarian Ministry of Health emphasized to the BR

why other federal states do not follow the Stiko recommendation and proceed differently, is beyond the knowledge of the Free State

.

Booster vaccination and recovery: Some federal states equate - disagreement even with 2G-Plus

The booster chaos does not end here, however: If you also include those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered at the same time, the situation here also resembles a patchwork quilt. A recovery after two corona vaccinations is equated with boosters in federal states such as Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Hamburg. In federal states such as Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hesse and Thuringia, however, the following applies: Even if you have recovered after two vaccinations, you are not considered boosted until you get the third vaccination.

The regulations are particularly relevant for the 2G-Plus rule, according to which only people who have been vaccinated twice or who have recovered with test evidence have access to certain areas.

In many places, boosters are exempted from this test requirement, but there is no uniform regulation here either.

Saxony-Anhalt, for example, is particularly strict.

"Adults who have already received a booster vaccination or who can show proof of recovery are not exempt from the additional test requirement in Saxony-Anhalt with the 2G-Plus access model," replied the Ministry of Health to the

MDR

request.

Accordingly, you have to continue to be tested there - even if you are boosted.
