The Government of Bolivia reported this Wednesday that the trial against former President Jeanine Áñez will begin soon.

The announcement aroused criticism from the former president's defense, which assured CNN that they have not yet received an official notification from the courts.

In a message posted on Facebook, the Minister of Government, Eduardo del Castillo, said that the trial against Áñez and two former officials will begin in "the following days for having acted against the Political Constitution of the State on November 10, 11 and 12 of year 2019, within the illegal self-proclamation in the presidency of Bolivia, without previously considering the resignations of the elected authorities in line of succession, before an empty Senate and Legislative Assemblies and without a quorum ".

The official added in his message: "In simple terms, what the former senator did was to proclaim herself in the presence of the media and diplomatic representatives, without complying with the formalities established in the Constitution and the Law."

One of Áñez's lawyers, Luis Adolfo Guillén, told CNN in a telephone interview on Wednesday that the defense of the former president had not received an official notification from a court and, in addition, criticized the Government for the announcement.

Guillén said that the Ministry of Government, being part of the executive branch of the State, is not one of the "entities empowered to give a communication from the Judicial Branch and, not even from the Judicial Branch, but from the Sentencing Court, which is in charge of to lead the process ".

"It is a completely irregular, anomalous situation and even a situation of pressure precisely on the court that will be in charge of carrying out this procedure," Guillén added.

The lawyer said that, after the announcement, he does not doubt that in the next two weeks the defense will be receiving notification from a court with the date of the opening of the trial, an action that, according to him, will be the product of pressure from the Government.

CNN tried to confirm the opening of the trial this Wednesday with the Bolivian Judicial Branch, but a request for comment had not been answered.

The Bolivian Attorney General's Office accused Áñez at the end of November of assuming the presidency in an "unconstitutional manner" and without complying with the laws of his country, when he governed for a year from November 2019, after the resignation of then-president Evo Morales in the midst of a controversy unleashed by alleged irregularities detected in the presidential elections that year.

Áñez has repeatedly said that everything is about a political persecution against her.
