A drilling tool built by the European Space Agency will open an Apollo 17 lunar soil container that has not been touched for nearly 50 years.

The opening will allow the extraction of precious lunar gases that may have been preserved in the sample and would allow us to decipher what the Moon smells like, in addition to helping to better understand its geology.
