"Concern for the employees"

2022-01-14T13:05:22.148Z

The President of the Saxon State Medical Association Erik Bodendieck, 55, on everyday life as a doctor, attacks by opponents of vaccination - and criticism from other doctors.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Bodendieck, do you feel threatened?

Bodendieck:

Yes, but not in such a way that I have to file a complaint every day.

The mood has become more aggressive, also in my everyday practice.

Only a few days ago we had a patient in the practice who had to wait for his vaccination appointment due to an emergency and who then became absent.

SPIEGEL:

What is the situation in Saxony for a vaccinating doctor?

Bodendieck:

The focus of those who refuse to vaccinate has shifted over the holidays from the vaccinating doctors to a possible vaccination requirement, I think things have calmed down a bit there.

But we still get daily mail with bad insults or threats.

SPIEGEL:

How do you react to that?

Bodendieck:

We recently filed a complaint.

Which we don't always do.

In Saxony, I also have a problem with enforcing the rule of law.

Our law enforcement agencies are not the ones showing their teeth here.

SPIEGEL:

Would you like more support?

Bodendiek:

Yes.

Nothing has been heard from the current justice minister.

It was different under her predecessor, who positioned himself much faster.

I'm worried about the employees in my practice and the employees here in the State Medical Association in Dresden.

This is actually an open house - now the State Criminal Police Office comes to the risk assessment.

The mail we receive has such consequences – including from doctors, by the way.

SPIEGEL:

Does that surprise you?

Bodendieck:

Doctors are also part of the cross-section of the population.

There is mail from colleagues who are upset, for example, about the obligation to wear masks in medical practices.

But that is only a small part, maybe five percent of the 26,000 licensed physicians in Saxony.

Doctors like to grumble and moan.

But I can deal with that, that's not the big problem.

SPIEGEL:

Who or what is the big problem?

Bodendieck:

People who can't get out of their bubbles and can't get out of their thought patterns.

I don't want to describe them all as lateral thinkers, I rather call them the unconvincing.

And what we fundamentally lack as a society: tolerance for necessities.

This has nothing to do with Corona, it was there before.
