An important project has been in place for five years to compensate for the loss of parking spaces and to better network all modes of transport: a mobility hub for Regensburg.

But the project is not under a good star.

Regensburg - It has been almost five years since the Regensburg city council issued the planning order for a "mobility hub" in April 2017 on the parking lot at the old ice rink.

A multi-storey car park was to replace the almost 300 parking spaces that were lost on the Donaumarkt due to the construction of the Museum of Bavarian History.

Retailers in the old town in particular keep reminding us of this.

In addition, the various modes of transport should be networked there.

A multi-storey car park with 1,500 parking spaces for cars, parking spaces for bicycles, car-sharing, buses and taxis was planned, flanked by some infrastructure.

Mobility hub in Regensburg: There are always delays

But the project is not under a good star.

In 2017 it was still expected that an urban planning competition could be held at the latest two years later in order to advance the project, but in reality hardly anything has happened to date.

First of all, there was always a need for coordination with the World Heritage Committee, which caused delays.

At the end of 2020, part of the area that was originally part of the planning was eliminated.

The area of the youth hostel at the old ice stadium was also intended for development for the mobility hub.

The city had secured the area by exchanging land with the German Youth Hostel Association.

The plan: The existing youth hostel was to be demolished and rebuilt to the east of the "Am Winterhafen" residential development.

But due to economic problems in the wake of the corona crisis, the plans for the new building of the youth hostel were scrapped.

The exchange contract was reversed in October 2020.

Mobility hub in Regensburg: Planning is back at the very beginning

Next week, a good year later, the planning committee in the Regensburg city council will take the first steps to react to the changed situation. Both the land use plan and the development plan for the area will be changed. The entire area at the old ice stadium - with the exception of the youth hostel - will be redesignated as a "special area mobility hub". "This means, for example, that after the law has come into force there is the possibility of building a rather low, but more space-intensive parking facility as well as a compact multi-storey car park," says the draft resolution.

However, the full implementation is now completely open again, because: In contrast to the first development plan, which was drawn up in 2019, there are "no concrete planning considerations yet".

The building volume study created at that time is waste and must be reworked in view of the changed situation.

In other words: you are back at the beginning.
