Everything you need to know about ransomware attacks 4:05
(CNN Spanish) --
The Senate of Argentina reported this Friday that it suffered a computer attack last Wednesday at dawn.
In a series of tweets they detailed that it was a "ransomware" type action or data hijacking, a technique that consists of using a computer virus to block access to data and ask for a ransom payment to unlock them.
Attacks of this type were perpetrated in recent months against different public bodies, the Judiciary and companies in Argentina, according to the Senate.
“Hackers 'hijack' the information and then demand a ransom for it.
In the case of the Senate of the Nation, all the stolen information is public and is available to everyone within our transparency site”, they explained.
Finally, they indicated that a computer security team has been working from the moment of the attack, which has so far managed to recover most of the relevant information and isolate sensitive equipment, according to the statement.
The Senate said that it hopes that with these measures the operations on the page can be recovered “soon”.
For now, when a user enters the web, a message appears saying “sorry for the inconvenience, the site is under maintenance”.
