One of the smartest strategists in the SPD is leaving: Björn Böhning, currently State Secretary for Digital Affairs in Hubertus Heil's Ministry of Labor, is surprisingly giving up his job in the federal government.

According to SPIEGEL information, Böhning is switching to the film industry.

It should be over by the end of the month.

For the Social Democrats, including the Ministry of Labor, his departure is a great loss.

Böhning has had an illustrious career in the SPD.

He became known to a broad public when he was elected Juso boss in 2004.

Since then, the 43-year-old has been one of the Social Democrats' most influential string-pullers and shrewd negotiators.

Böhning ran unsuccessfully for the Bundestag in 2009, rose nonetheless, represented the left wing of the party, and headed Klaus Wowereit's state chancellery in Berlin for many years.

He is a confidant of the former SPD leader Andrea Nahles, but also sought out Olaf Scholz early on.

After the federal elections in 2017, Böhning moved to the Ministry of Labor as a civil servant, where he anchored the “Digital Working World” think tank and also initiated a number of laws, from the Supply Chain Act to part-time bridging.

Heil will now have to look for a new state secretary to fill the gap.

It was initially unclear where exactly Böhning was headed.

In terms of cultural policy, however, Böhning already has experience.

He was chairman of the supervisory board at Medienboard and sat on the supervisory board of the federal cultural events.

So his future field is not completely new to the Social Democrat.
