The street lighting in Hohenpeißenberg is to be renewed according to a decision by the municipal council.

For this purpose, the old lamp heads are replaced with new LED lamps.

Although this costs the municipality around 76,000 euros, it saves a lot of energy per year and thus also money and CO2.

Hohenpeissenberg – The street lamps in Hohenpeissenberg are to be renewed. This was decided unanimously by the municipal council at its most recent meeting and at the same time concluded a modernization contract with the energy company "Lechwerke" (LEW), which also owns the lighting. As head of the building authority Stefan Fischer explained at the meeting, there are still around 230 "conventional lighting points" in the municipality of Hohen Peißenberg. With these, the old lamp head is to be exchanged and replaced with an LED lamp head. "Street lighting is a big cost item, it should be reduced accordingly," said Fischer. By replacing the lanterns, the municipality saves 12,930 euros in electricity costs every year, 64,700 kilowatt hours less energy would be consumed and the amount of CO2 saved, that would emit on average 15 cars per year. "That would be something where we can do something specifically for climate protection," said Mayor Thomas Dorsch ((CSU/non-party) about the renewal of the lantern heads.

The modernization of the street lamps is therefore a measure that serves to save energy and protect the climate and at the same time an opportunity to reduce costs. The new lighting heads are to be installed and tested by the company "LEW". Equipping the approximately 230 lanterns with LED light would cost a total of 81,184 euros, but if the municipality pays for everything in one go, the costs will be reduced by six percent. So the exchange will cost around 76,000 euros net.

Gabriela Seitz-Hoffmann (Aufwind) asked about the brightness of the new LED lighting. It is possible to choose warmer white, Fischer replied. "The topic has extreme potential for conflict," said Dorsch: "For some it's too bright, for others it's too dark." When Erika Sebrich asked about species protection, Dorsch replied that the lamps were insect-friendly. Municipal councilor Hermann Summer (Aufwind) asked about a way of renewing the street lighting in such a way that it offers a promising solution that might work independently of the electricity provider. "Anything there yet?" he asked.

There are street lamps that could be operated with solar energy, but they are too expensive to be considered for Hohenpeissenberg, Fischer replied: "It's difficult to imagine." -Betriebs is a specialist, pointed out that solar lights would entail considerable maintenance costs and were not yet technically suitable for the entire local network.

"At some point we will have to generate electricity ourselves," said Summer, and asked whether the community was already beginning to think more in this direction.

As a municipality, you also have to think about how you can rely more on local electricity generators.

"From the perspective, I think that's the right approach," said Dorsch.

However, he sees the change as a task for society as a whole.

"It's about generating and saving electricity."
