Los Angeles Latino neighborhood wants Vicente Fernandez Street to honor Mexican legend

The iconic Latino neighborhood of Boyle Heights is seeking to rename one of its streets in homage to "one of the greatest artists of all time, period," according to Councilman Kevin de León.


Kevin de León, a member of the Los Angeles City Council, proposed this Wednesday during the virtual municipal session that a street in the

iconic Latino neighborhood of Boyle Heights be renamed as

Vicente Fernández Street .

in honor of the Mexican ranchera idol, who died in December at the age of 81.

Under the proposal, two blocks on Bailey Street, running from 1st Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, would be renamed and are close to the city's iconic Mariachi Plaza.

De León said that

one of the greatest artists of all time

He added: "His legacy is not just the music he made, but the memories we all make listening to the music he created and shared with us."

In life, Fernández received

a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

, three Grammy Awards and eight Latin Grammy Awards, as well as having sold more than 50 million records.

The city of Pico Rivera, in California, also plans to rename a street after the singer at the

Pico Rivera Sports Arena.

Fernández retired from the stage in 2016. He died in his native Guadalajara after months of health problems and an injury due to a fall at his Los Tres Potrillos ranch.
