Massive deforestation in Romania: a crime against nature

REPORT - In Transylvania and Moldavia, forests whose origins sometimes date back more than 10,000 years are vandalized daily. Deforestation fueled by sprawling illegal trafficking.


It's 3:12 and 46 seconds. The image is frozen. The pale light of the computer screen illuminates the tired face of Tiberiu Bosutar. He observes a lorry pulling behind it two trailers full of freshly cut tree trunks in a dimly lit street in Vatra Moldovitei, in the Suceava region. With a stroke of the mouse, he enlarges the image at the level of the license plate, then notes it with the time and date of passage. Thick piles of papers with similar observations written cover his desk. He pulls out other bundles neatly stored in a cupboard to show them to us.

“I have more than 1000 days of recording like this”,

tells us the 50-year-old with steel blue eyes that light up his face, which is topped with gray hair, carefully combed back.

“I have noted the comings and goings of more than 20,000 trucks like this.

Standing behind him, his wife confirms:

” He has only been doing this for three years.
