Not only Germany is struggling with the omicron wave, the number of infections is also increasing sharply in Italy.

With over 180,000 new infections, an absolute record has now been broken.

Rome – While Germany is reporting absolute records in the number of infections twice in one week, the omicron wave is also sweeping Italy.

On Thursday, the country's health authorities reported more than 180,000 new infections.

The number of patients requiring treatment in the intensive care unit is also increasing.

Is the situation in Italy now escalating completely?

The seven-day incidence of corona cases in Italy also continues to rise. As of Thursday, the authorities had recorded an average of 1,988 corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide in the past seven days, as the top health institute ISS announced on Friday in Rome, citing data from the Ministry of Health. A week earlier, the value was still 1669 cases.

The trend has become particularly clear since Christmas.

More and more Covid 19 patients occupy beds in hospitals.

For the intensive care units, the ISS gave the Italy-wide share at 17.5 percent.

However, the value is still below the alarm threshold of 30 percent.

However, there can be no talk of a relaxed situation, the current number of corona cases is at a record level.

On Thursday evening, the authorities reported around 184,600 new corona infections and 316 deaths with the virus within one day.

Strict corona rules in Italy - Also compulsory vaccination for people over 50 years of age

The government has been tightening the corona rules step by step for months.

For example, the 2G rule now applies in restaurants and in local and long-distance transport.

However, many experts fear that the opening of schools after the winter holidays could accelerate the rate of infection again.

Corona vaccinations are now compulsory for people over the age of 50.

Cannabis has been used medicinally by humans for thousands of years.

A new study now describes a protective effect of the active ingredient against corona.
