Anyone who likes to eat something sweet or drink a glass of wine had to dig deeper into their pockets in 2021.

The prices for luxury foods in NRW have risen significantly - except for beer.

Düsseldorf – Many customers have noticed it in their own wallets over the past few months: shopping in NRW has become significantly more expensive.

The State Statistical Office has now published precise data on the increased prices for luxury foods for NRW.

They show that, especially for chocolate and confectionery, you had to dig much deeper into your pockets compared to 2020.

The only good news is with beer.

In terms of luxury food prices, chocolate and confectionery were hit hardest in 2021.

There, customers had to pay 3.0 or 3.2 percent more, as the State Statistical Office announced on Friday in Düsseldorf.

Tobacco products also became more expensive again, but at 3.1 percent, prices did not rise as much as in 2020 (+ 4.9 percent).

Most alcoholic beverages also became significantly more expensive.

2.2 percent more had to be paid for spirits and 2.0 percent more for wine.

Beer was cheaper last year, but only by a modest 0.3 percent.

On average, consumer prices in NRW rose by 3.2 percent in 2021.

Prices in NRW: chocolate, pralines and alcohol are significantly more expensive – why is that?

The significantly higher prices in 2021 can probably also be explained by the temporary reduction in VAT between July and December 2020 caused by the corona pandemic.

According to the State Statistical Office, however, the influence of the VAT reduction cannot be precisely quantified.

"However, the average prices for luxury foods in 2020 were below those of 2019 for almost all the goods considered here," says a spokesman.

Only tobacco was more expensive in 2020 than in 2019. This is due to the fact that tobacco products are subject to tobacco tax in addition to VAT.

This was not reduced in 2020.
