It's a heart project.

Breathing life into a square in Munich Giesing with a small Art Nouveau kiosk.

After three years, the pavilion is on the verge of collapse.

Munich - This idea inspired many in Giesing: On the Hans-Mielich-Platz, a pavilion based on the Lisbon model could serve as a district meeting point - but ultimately the bureaucracy stands in the way of this idea.

Flair from Lisbon in Giesing: Pavilion idea at Hans-Mielich-Platz

The background: As early as March 2019, Julian Göttlicher presented his idea of a small Portuguese-style art nouveau kiosk on Hans-Mielich-Platz to the district committee (BA).

The pavilion will offer snacks, light alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine, board games, toilets and seating.

Enthusiasm was high and his project received the full approval of the committee members.

Now, three years, a local election and several visits to the authorities later, the project is on the brink of collapse.

Because the building department rejected the application made in May 2021.

Munich: Hans-Mielich-Platz in Giesing is public transport

In the application, the BA asked for the area on Hans-Mielich-Platz (Untergiesing) to be redesignated from public transport to urban land.

So Göttlicher could have leased it.

However, according to the building department, a reallocation is not possible due to the traffic importance of the square: “As is well known, Hans-Mielich-Platz is equally frequented by pedestrians and cyclists;

it also serves as a marketplace for the people of Giesingen.”

Despite bad news - BA still stands behind projects

Göttlicher doesn't want to give up just yet. "The building department also has a generally positive view of the project and is now looking again at what options there are." Above all, the support and encouragement that the prospective kiosk operator is receiving from various quarters makes it difficult for him to let go of the project that is close to his heart . "When I see the projects that have prevailed despite resistance, I think to myself, I'll probably manage to put this pavilion there."

The district committee is still behind the project.

"It would revitalize an otherwise rather lifeless square," says Sebastian Weisenburger (Greens).

The pavilion would also have a positive effect on citizens' sense of security.

“I would like the pavilion to come.

It would be a highlight for Untergiesing and an enrichment for the district.”

According to Göttlicher, the garbage problem can also be improved with his kiosk.

"The place is already noticed, children play here or ride their bikes, but there are no real places to sit and people bring their own food with them." The consequences would be coffee mugs flying around and empty bottles.

Göttlicher now hopes that he will still receive approval for his pavilion.

Everything is already prepared, as soon as the green light comes from the city, he can call the company in Lisbon and order.
