At the turn of the year 2021/2022, changes will come into force again in Germany.

kreiszeitung.de reveals what we have to prepare for on January 1, 2022.

Berlin/Hannover – New year, new luck: At the turn of the year, many rules and regulations will change again in Germany and Lower Saxony on January 1, 2022.

While the citizens of Lower Saxony have to adapt to the new Corona regulation and set warning level 3 around Christmas time, the citizens of Germany have to get away from Corona regulations, 2G in retail and tightened Corona rules Prepare schools and daycare centers for some changes in 2022 in the supermarket, driver's license and sick leave.

It's like that every year.

We took a look at the changes in the law and wrote down the most important ones.

Changes in 2022 in the supermarket, driver's license and post office: what will change at the turn of the year?

An overview

  • No more thin plastic bags in the supermarket:

From January 2022, apart from the Corona rules, there will be a ban on light plastic carrier bags in supermarkets at Aldi, Lidl and Edeka as well as Rewe & Co. in Germany. This applies to bags with a wall thickness of 15 to 50 microns. The change in the packaging law is another measure taken by the federal government to protect our environment from plastic waste.

  • In supermarkets, the deposit rule is being extended:

the can deposit introduced in 2003 by the then Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin (Greens) is now also being applied to other packaging. A deposit of 25 cents is charged for disposable plastic bottles. There is also a uniform can deposit of 25 cents. There are exceptions for milk and mixed milk drinks. There, the mandatory deposit will only take effect from January 1, 2024. Beverage cartons such as Tetra Paks will remain deposit-free. They are considered environmentally friendly due to their recyclability. For products already on the market, there is a waiting period until July 1, 2022.

  • Postage at Deutsche Post is becoming more expensive:

After almost three years of stable letter prices, Deutsche Post is increasing the postage for all basic national letter products and for some additional letter services as of January 1, 2022.

The new prices will apply until the end of 2024.

The increases also apply to e-mail.

    (see table below).

  • The minimum wage is being raised:

The statutory minimum wage is currently EUR 9.60 per hour.

In the new year, it is to rise twice: the minimum wage is to be raised to EUR 9.82 on January 1, 2022 and to EUR 10.45 on July 1, 2022.

In addition: The traffic light government of the SPD, Greens and FDP under Labor Minister Hubertus Heil want to increase the minimum wage to 12 euros per hour.

  • No more sick notes in paper form:

the certificate of incapacity for work on yellow paper will soon be obsolete. From July 1, 2022, an electronic reporting procedure will replace the paper form. This was actually planned for January 1, 2022, but since there are problems with the implementation, another six months have now been planned as a buffer.

  • Tax-free Corona bonus for employees:

Employers have been able to pay their employees a tax-free Corona bonus since March 2020.

This is still tax-free until March 31, 2022, after which the taxes will be due again.

The bonus is tax-free up to an amount of 1500 euros.

However, it is a voluntary employer benefit.

The nursing staff, however, also have to be patient.

And under certain circumstances, only vaccinated nurses receive the corona bonus.

  • The first driving licenses must be exchanged:

The first old driving licenses expire on January 1, 2022.

The last ones will no longer be valid in January 2033.

For those who were born before 1953, January 19, 2033 is always the reference date - regardless of when your driver's license was issued.

New year, new luck: As every year, a lot will change in Germany in 2022.

But gas and electricity providers will also increase their prices in 2022 and adjust gas prices and electricity prices to the market accordingly.

This is partly because the tax on CO₂ per ton will increase from 25 to 30 euros.
