An underwater volcano erupted today (Saturday) off the coast of Tonga Island in the Pacific Ocean, causing tsunami waves that swept homes.
Tsunami waves have also been observed off the coast of American Samoa, and a tsunami warning has been issued in several other countries in the region, including Fiji. No casualties are known at this time.
According to the Meteorological Service of Australia, the eruption of the Honga Tonga-Honga submarine volcano, located about 65 km north of the Tonga capital, Nuku'lofa, caused a 1.2-meter tsunami.

In New Zealand, the emergency services have issued a warning of tsunami activity on the north and east coasts.
