There has been a new corona test requirement for daycare children for a week.

The responsibility lies with the parents.

You test at home and prove the negative result in the facility.

In the district of Erding, the start went smoothly.

Erding

– Heidi Stelzer is proud of “her” parents. The head of the Dorfen children's home Pusteblume has pinned a notice in the hallway of the facility, on which she thanks the families of her protégés that "everything is working so well". As of this week, parents have had to test their little ones for Corona three times a week before taking them to kindergarten or daycare. The start went well in the district. Stelzer is not the only one to report an initial positive response after a week.

She had started the past week a little nervously, says the Dorfen teacher.

You never know how innovations will be received.

But on Monday it was already clear: "This time the system is really great," says Stelzer.

There are always small teething problems.

If you forget to take the test, you just have to go home and do it again.

The parents of all crèche and kindergarten children take a smear test from their little ones every other day.

They receive the self-tests via coupons in pharmacies.

In the Dorfener Dandelion, the parents show the test cassette and then dispose of it in a bucket provided especially for this purpose.

Only then can the child join the group.

This is one variant. The second option is for the parents to document and sign on a form issued by the ministry that they have taken a self-test with their child. At the facility, they just show the slip of paper. This is what happens, for example, in the St. Johannes Catholic Kindergarten in Erding. "We trust the parents that they have actually taken a test," says facility manager Andrea Schmid. "The parents feel the trust, that's so important, especially at this time."

The note is the more hygienic alternative, Schmid explains her decision for this procedure.

In addition, the test result on the cassette sometimes changes color over time.

"Then suddenly a positive test is displayed just because the children were tested too early or the way was too far," says Schmid.

The form solution is also used in Kinderland Erding.

"That's more practical for us," explains facility manager Catrin Pricolo.

Here, too, the start was quite uncomplicated, and the parents did a good job.

Of course, the system decided by the Bavarian cabinet is based on trust.

If you want to cheat, you can do that too – whether with a test cassette or a form.

The crèches and kindergartens have to rely on the parents to carry out the tests with their children sensibly at home.

It would look different if regular pool tests were introduced for the little ones like in elementary schools, i.e. simultaneous PCR testing of all children.

Pricolo would have preferred this solution.

"Then we would actually be on the safe side that the test was done," says the Erdinger Kinderland director.

But there are no PCR pool tests in the district so far - unlike in Augsburg, for example.

The Erding district office had carried out a query at the daycare centers in autumn.

Result: "Only about ten percent of the facilities have registered a need," says Claudia Fiebrandt-Kirmeyer, spokeswoman for the district office.

There was little interest on the part of either the carriers or the parents.

In addition, according to Fiebrandt-Kirmeyer, the administrative burden of a daycare pool test would be “not proportionate”.

The educators also have a divided opinion on the pool test by supervisors or specialist staff.

What works in elementary school is "complete nonsense" in kindergarten and daycare, says Stelzer.

Especially with the little ones, one tries very hard to maintain respect and self-determination.

"I refuse to just put anything in the children's mouths, be it a spoon or a test stick," says Stelzer.

At home with mum or dad it's something completely different, adds Schmid.

"Home is a sanctuary." Apart from the fact that the kindergartens could not provide the staff, a pool test would also restrict the parents' freedom.

"Then everyone would have to be in front of the door at the same time and couldn't bring their children flexibly," says Stelzer.

"It's good that the parents are held accountable," confirms Yolinda Bauer, head of the Sancta Katharina children's home in Ottenhofen. You can trust them. After all, it is in their own interest to “do everything to ensure that daycare centers remain open and that there is no quarantine”.
