In 2040, several thousand people are expected to live in Regensburg.
This is the forecast of the Federal Statistical Office of Bavaria.
But how does this affect the population?
Regensburg – In 20 years, around 158,000 people will be living in Regensburg.
That corresponds to around 5,600 more citizens than in 2020. This is forecast by the Bavarian State Statistical Office.
Based on the entire Free State, the office expects an increase of almost four percent.
That's about half a million more people.
This means that around 13.66 million people would be living in Bavaria by the end of 2040.
The Regensburg region is attracting more and more people
Regensburg* is one of the areas that seems to attract people like a magnet. While the population tends to decrease in northern Bavaria, it continues to grow in the south. Although the Upper Palatinate metropolis is located roughly in the middle of the Free State, it is more oriented towards the south. The
Mittelbayerische
Zeitung
writes that there is a “stable population development” for the entire administrative district
. For the Upper Palatinate, it is expected that the population will increase by 2.1 percent (+ 23,000 people) by 2040.
Both the district and the city of Regensburg will increase in residents according to the forecast by the state office.
A growth forecast of 3.7 to 5.3 percent is given for both.
This increases the population of Regensburg from 152,300 to 157,900.
The district will probably even surpass the 200,000-inhabitant mark in 2028 and will probably have 204,600 people in 2040 (currently 194,300).

Regensburg is one of the youngest cities in Bavaria
Regensburg, Munich*, Erlangen* and the district of Freising have the youngest population in Bavaria with an average age of almost 42 years (41.6 years). It is calculated that this value will not change much over the next 20 years, since universities and modern jobs attract young people. At the same time, the population is becoming more international, according to the Federal Statistical Office. The average age for 2040 is 43.2 years. The average age in the district has increased from 44 to 46.1 years.
But the relationship between working and non-working is strained.
If there are currently around 51.1 people who are not able to work for every 100 people who are able to work, in 2040 there will be around 60.2.
This has consequences for urban development, writes the
Mittelbayerische.
“Problems include high demand for apartments, expensive rents and real estate, dwindling land reserves, and a congested transport system.
There are signs of a shortage of workers and growing social inequality within urban society," said the municipal press office at the request of the
Mittelbayerische
.
So there is still plenty to do for Regensburg's urban developers in the future.
