Anyone who grows potted plants at home, and especially those who have tried and failed, knows the stage where you think something bad is going on in the plant, but you do not really know what the problem is or how to help it.

Many times it is difficult to give up and pass judgment on an out-of-date planter, and it is even harder to admit that the problem is with us - because we probably did something wrong.

Too much / too little water?

Maybe we forgot to fertilize?

Maybe we were stunned at the stage when they explained to us in the nursery what conditions he needed because we thought more about what tool would suit him and look good in our living room?

This is exactly why the nursery of Kibbutz Ramat Rachel offers a very special and cute service that is a kind of convalescent home for exhausted potted plants.

Every week on Thursday between 13: 00-15: 00 the general public is invited to come with flower pots that need first aid, and get a diagnosis and treatment advice.

The service is offered completely free of charge by Nadav Ben Dov, who currently runs the kibbutz nursery and initiated its establishment, and in the past also served as the kibbutz's ornamental coordinator.

"We just wanted to do something nice."

"The idea for this service was born from the fact that we just wanted to do something nice, not necessarily in money. And also from the fact that we saw in the nursery that there are quite a few people who are frustrated by what happens to their pots at home, but when they come to the nursery and describe the situation. Says Nadav Ben Dov. "When they come here with the plant I usually see right away what the problem is."

What are the problems that usually come with them?

It is almost always a lack / excess of water, too much / too little sun or pests. Sometimes there are cases of soil diseases or root diseases, which are also easy to diagnose at a glance. But sometimes there are a little less distinct cases, such as someone placing his flower pots near the heating - and that's what killed them. Or a mystery like the case of a woman who insisted that no matter what she did ‘just not go for her’ with the flower pots. When she brought them to the nursery for testing I smelled the soil and noticed a strong smell of urine. It turns out that she has a cat that peed regularly in all the pots and that is what killed them. "

So what happens when they come to you with an exhausted flowerpot?

Is he hospitalized in the nursery?

"(Laughs) No, I'm not a hospital. But I try to give the best starting point possible for treatment, and give precise instructions for the conditions the plant needs. Our nursery does specialize in succulents, but I have a background as a gardener and landscape architect, so I understand houseplants as well. And outdoor plants as well. "

"Some people also come with stories of emotional connection to the plants - for example, someone came with a cactus and said that this flowerpot was placed on the windowsill of her deceased mother or someone with a rose bush that belonged to his grandfather ... even if it seems impossible to save the plant .

The 3 most important things that Ben Dov says in the context of herbal care are: proper placement, proper watering and regular fertilization. But he also has another tip: music. "I'm not a freak of it, but I believe that if you play music to plants, it has an effect. I keep playing music in the nursery 24/7, even at night there is music here - for years. It's nice and makes a good atmosphere." He even put together a special playlist for plants in Spotify, if you feel like trying to expose your pots to a bit of culture as well.

A pot service for potted plants is provided every Thursday, between the hours of 13: 00-15: 00 at the nursery at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel.
