The Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rishon LeZion Yitzhak Yosef, threatened last night (Saturday) in his weekly lesson that if the conversion law promoted by the government is approved, he will order "genealogy books" in which "net Jews" will be registered, and the converts' names will be dropped.

"It is terrible and horrible what they are doing with the conversion," the rabbi said.

"If they do such a thing, I will enter the Chief Rabbinate Council and perhaps decide in coordination with the great men of Israel to make pedigree books."

In the past, the ultra-Orthodox raised the possibility of editing pedigrees, but the plan did not materialize.

"We need to fight this thing. They are terrorists in Kerem Yisrael and they have strange opinions."

The chief rabbi added, "Do they want to convert small children, is it conversion? Many rabbis, even crocheted kippahs, come and strengthen us in all things, kosher, conversion and the Western Wall. There is a widespread opinion on this issue."

Despite being in a state position, Rabbi Yosef also attacked the government over a recent kosher law that allows private corporations to grant kosher status to businesses and restaurants, calling for prayers against it, "They are destroyers of religion, destroyers of Judaism. We must not cooperate with them."

Rabbi Yosef also alluded to a recent decision by the Ombudsman for Judges, retired Judge Uri Shoham, according to which his dismissal due to his involvement in political affairs should be examined.

"Let him issue another opinion on me, I am not interested in these things. I say these things to the public everywhere, not to be afraid."

Last week, Minister of Religious Affairs Matan Kahana presented the memorandum of the Government Conversion Law, which is intended to allow city rabbis to convert, contrary to the position of the Chief Rabbinical Council of Israel.

Although Rabbi Chaim Druckman, one of the senior rabbis in religious Zionism, announced that he would not be able to express support for the law because of rabbinical opposition, Kahana claimed that the memorandum of law was written in consultation with other senior rabbis.

The main points of the law, which provokes strong opposition in the ultra-Orthodox world, stipulate that city rabbis will be able to establish conversion tribunals within the state conversion system under rules of procedure, supervision, control and uniform certificates for all.

As part of this, a "Rabbinical Cities" district will be established in the State Conversion Division, which will provide administrative services to the rabbis of the cities.

The person who will determine the uniform rules for conversion is a new rabbinical committee, but the chief rabbi, the steering committee and the chief rabbinical council will have the authority to cancel the appointment of a conversion judge in a controlled manner in the event of a violation of the rules.
