Fantastic weather, great snow conditions, but a tragic accident: A 30-year-old woman from North Rhine-Westphalia falls while skiing on the Zugspitze on Saturday and sustains serious head injuries.

So far nobody knows exactly what happened.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

- It was a dreamy sunny day - down in the valley and up on the glacier at an altitude of more than 2500 meters.

For a 30-year-old woman, the ski trip to the Zugspitze on Saturday afternoon ended with a tragic accident.

The vacationer from the Cologne area in North Rhine-Westphalia fell so badly on the Wetterwandeck descent that she is now fighting for her life in a hospital in the district - according to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station on Sunday afternoon.

A fall on an easy, blue slope is a mystery to all rescue workers

The woman spent a holiday in the region with an acquaintance. When skiing on the Zugspitze, however, she was apparently alone. At least the rescue workers only found the woman. The emergency services cannot say exactly what happened on the slope, which is actually not particularly demanding – it is officially classified as “blue”, i.e. easy. Subsequent skiers discovered the woman behind a hump after what was probably a serious fall. “We found them unconscious just as we were told,” says Bernhard Riesch, who was on duty on the Zugspitze with his Krün mountain rescue service. The helpers provided the woman with the best possible care, "but we couldn't do much due to her condition". The casualty was finally taken to a hospital with the rescue helicopter from Reutte.

It is clear so far that the vacationer wore a helmet, but this did not prevent serious head injuries.

In order to be able to clarify what actually happened, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police are looking for witnesses who saw the woman's accident around 2.45 p.m. on the Wetterwandeck slope in the area of the so-called camel humps.

Phone: 0 88 21/91 70. There are no webcams or surveillance cameras in this area of the Zugspitz ski area, so there are no recordings.
